7-ELEVEN Grocery Stores History

In 1927 an employee of the Southland Ice Company in Dallas named John Jefferson Green agreed with his boss Joe C. Thompson to open a grocery store in the factory, so that workers could buy basic food items.

With the ice of the factory are better preserved milk, eggs, … The success was enormous and they opened new stores in other factories, which operated under the name Southland Corporation.

In 1928, there were 21 stores in the greater Dallas area and the grocery chain was renamed Tote’m Store.

In 1946 a strong expansion of stores began and the name changed to the current one: 7-Eleven (means: open from 7AM to 11PM, 7 days a week). In 1952 it already has more than 100 stores.

In 1963 some stores began to open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In 1973 it opened the first 7-Eleven in Canada, also in Japan and in 1976 in Mexico.

In 1991 the owners of the 7-Eleven chain in Japan purchased the Southland parent company and renamed it 7-Eleven Inc.

Currently, 7-Eleven Inc. it is a subsidiary of Japanese Seven & I Holdings (since 2005), but maintains its headquarters in Dallas, Texas, U. S. A.
