UWAJIMAYA Supermarkets History
Fujimatsu Moriguchi was a Japanese immigrant who arrived in the United States in 1923, settling in Tacoma, Washington.
After working as a farmer and in a restaurant, Moriguchi founded Uwajimaya in 1928, selling traditional Japanese food to Japanese Americans.
In 1930 Moriguchi met his future wife Sadako, whom he married in 1932 and moved to Seattle, where they opened a store at 422 S. Main Street in the Chinatown-International District.
In 1962, after the death of its founder, Uwajimaya became controlled by his children and his wife.
In 1970 the store moved south of the city and became one of the largest Asian supermarkets in the Pacific Northwest.

In 1978 he opened the second Uwajimaya store in Bellevue.
In 1991 he opened Uwajimaya Bookstore on the second floor of the Seattle store, with books, newspapers, music and films in Japanese.
In 1998 the Uwajimaya Village, a retail center with Food Court, bank, …, was developed. The third store opens in Beaverton, Oregon and the fourth store opens in 2009 in Renton, Washington.
At present, Uwajimaya, Inc. it operates 4 stores, remains a family supermarket chain. Uwajimaya Grocery Stores Corporate Office is located in Seattle.
