In 1997, Mimi Song and her sister Marie Song came to the United States from South Korea. With no previous experience in the food retail sector and no commercial training, they opened a small grocery store in 1981.
The first Superior Grocers store opened in Covina, California. The items at a good price was a success and in the last 4 decades, the supermarket chain has expanded throughout Southern California and the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
