Eligio Peña (of Dominican origin) emigrated to New York in 1970 and worked in a small grocery store. Years later he was a partner in a Hispanic store and, after finishing his studies at the university, he went on to work at Associated Supermarkets.
To meet the growing demand of Hispanic customers who were coming to the United States, Peña founded the first Compare Foods supermarket in 1987 in Freeport, NY.
Just a year later, he opened the second Compare Foods store in Brentwood. The success of the supermarkets led to the arrival of the de Peña brothers in the United States, to join the family business.
The chain was able to expand in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts, to serve the growing Hispanic community. Supermarkets began opening in North Carolina in 2000 and the first Compare Foods Market in Charlotte and Durham in 2003.
Today, Compare Foods is still owned by the Peña family, in addition to franchises, with more than 90 supermarkets on the East Coast. Compare Foods’ headquarters is located in Wyandanch, NY.
