D'AGOSTINO Supermarkets Inc. History
In the 1920s, Pasquale and Nicola d’Agostino were two Italian immigrants newly arrived in America. They settled in New York City and had various jobs.
In 1931, the brothers used their meager savings to open a small grocery store on the Upper East Side, on Lexington Ave. and 83rd Street in Manhattan. The neighbors had a high purchasing power and the store was a bestseller.
In 1939, they moved to a larger store, which they called the “Yorkville Food Shoppe D’Agostino Brothers”, with a butcher’s department. The d’Agostino brothers were pioneers of full-service supermarkets in New York City.

In 1960 D’Agostino had a chain of 8 supermarkets on the East Side of Manhattan. In 1990 (maximum expansion of the chain) there were 26 locations in New York and Westchester County.
Today, D’Agostino Supermarkets, Inc. it is no longer a family-owned company (it was acquired by Gristedes). The D’Agostino Supermarket corporate office is located in Larchmont, NY, U.S.A.
