James Luther “J. L.” Turner lost his father at the age of 11, so he dropped out of school and went into business to support his family.
With all the commercial skill learned, James Turner and his son Cal Turner opened their first retail store (JL Turner and Son) in 1939 in Scottsville, Kentucky.
Retail was a success and by the 1950s they had 35 department stores in Kentucky and Tennessee.

In 1955 Cal Turner introduced the promotion of 1 dollar items and thus the first Dollar General store was born in Springfield, KY.
In 1968 Dollar General Corporation was listed on the New York Stock Exchange and since then is one of the most profitable companies in the United States.
