THE FOOD EMPORIUM History
In 1919, Louis Daitch opened a small butter and egg shop in New York City. He was expanding his business with new stores throughout the metropolitan area. This is how the Daitch Crystal Dairies chain was founded.
In the 1950s, Daitch Crystal Dairies was one of the leading grocery store chains in the NY area. In 1955, the 34 stores joined Shopwell Foods‘ 18 supermarkets.
In 1962, the chain had more than 100 stores, but it needed restructuring and cost reduction. In 1979 and under the direction of the Rosengarten family, The Food Emporium was founded, with the concept of a regional chain of regular everyday items alongside gourmet items.

In 1983, the Rosengarten family sold The Food Emporium to A&P. In 2012, A&P sold all stores to Key Food (an independent supermarket cooperative, owner of other chain stores such as The Food Universe, Key Food Fresh,…)
