FOODLAND Hawaiian Supermarkets History
In 1948, Irish-born businessman Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan opened the first Foodland store in Honolulu. It was the first modern supermarket in Hawaii.
The success of the first Foodland allowed it to expand with new supermarkets during the following years. In 1967 it expanded to Kauai, in 1970 to Maui, and in 1971 to the Big Island.
