GIANT EAGLE Supermarkets History
In 1928, three Pittsburgh-area families (the Goldsteins, Porter and Chait) founded the Eagle Grocery chain.
In 1931, Eagle Grocery merged with the OK Grocery chain to become Giant Eagle. In the following years the supermarket chain expanded rapidly into western Pennsylvania.

In the 1980s, Giant Eagle acquired the Valu-King chain. Beginning in 2000, Giant Eagle purchased independent retail chains such as Tops, County Market, Big Bear and Ricker’s.
Today, Giant Eagle Inc. has more than 400 supermarkets in 4 states and its head office is located in O’hara Township, Pennsylvania.
