GRISTEDES Grocery Store History
In 1888, the brothers Charles and Diedrich Gristede arrived in the United States from Germany. His first jobs in New York were in grocery stores.
In 1891 they were able to open their first grocery store in Manhattan (at 42nd Street and Second Avenue). In 1896 the business expanded and opened another store in Harlem.
In the 1920s, Gristedes Brothers opened stores in Westchester and Connecticut counties. By 1949 there were already 141 stores in the New York metropolitan area and in 1956 the first store opened on Long Island.

Gristedes was acquired by The Southland Corporation (the current owner of 7-Eleven) in 1968. In 1977 Gristedes specializes in gourmet products.
In 1986 Gristedes is acquired by Red Apple Co. becoming the largest supermarket chain in NYC. In 1999 the first Gristedes Pharmacy were opened.
Today, Gristedes Supermarkets is a subsidiary of the Red Apple Inc. retail group. and its headquarters are located in New York, U.S.A.
