JOANN Fabrics History

The history of Joann stores begins in 1943, when a group of German immigrants founded a small fabric and craft shop called the Fabric Shop in Cleveland, Ohio.

After a rapid expansion, with numerous locations, the chain changed its name to Jo-Ann Fabrics.

In 1969 it began trading under the name Fabri-Centers of America, Inc. In 1994 the chain had more than 340 locations in the United States and purchased the rival chain Cloth World.

In 1998 it bought the House of Fabrics chain, becoming the leading chain in the sector. Its name changes to Jo-Ann Stores Inc.

Today, Joann has locations in 49 states and is headquartered in Hudson, Ohio. Joann is owned by Leonard Green & Partners, a private investment firm based in Los Angeles, CA.
