PCC Community Markets Co-op Grocery Store History

In 1953, John Affolter has the idea of creating a food shopping club in Seattle, Washington, to get reduced prices. Originally, 15 Seattle families participated and the club had the name of May Valley Food Club.

In 1961, the members of the May Valley Food Club decided to create a cooperative called the Puget Consumers Co-op (or PCC). Members paid a semi-annual fee.

In 1969, the product stock is focused on natural food. The growth is very strong in the following years and in 1978 he buys Co-op East in Kirkland. PCC becomes a chain of stores.

In 1985, PCC Community Markets had 4 stores. In 1991 PCC acquired Meat Shop, Inc. and all the workers are integrated into the meat department.

In 1994, PCC acquired a farm to introduce the sale of organic eggs in its supermarkets. In 2003 PCC obtained organic certification in all its locations.

Today, PCC Community Markets continues to be a co-op and the leading American retail food cooperative in number of members (more than 100,000 members).

With 16 stores in the northwestern United States, PCC Markets’ headquarters are located in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A.
