SMART & FINAL History
In 1871, in the city of Los Angeles, Herman W. Hellman, Jacob Hass and Bernard Cohn opened a grocery store that they named Hellman, Haas Grocery Co. Thanks to the boom of Southern California in those years the store is a commercial success.
The chain of stores expanded and in 1889 the store was sold, changing its name to Haas, Baruch & Co. In 1895, it was one of the first grocery stores to introduce a private brand in the United States.
In 1914, J. S. “Jim” Smart and H. D. “Hildane” buy the chain of stores and change the name to Smart & Final Wholesale Grocers.

In the 1920s another innovation was introduced – self-service (Cash and Carry). In 1953 Smart & Final and Haas, Baruch & Co. they merge, to be one of the major supermarket chains in California.
In 1984, the chain of stores is acquired by Thriftimart. In 1994 the first stores opened in Mexico. In 2001, the retail chain is bought by the Bodega Latina group (subsidiary of Chedraui).
Currently, Smart & Final is owned by Bodega Latina Corporation, has more than 250 locations (Smart & Final, Smart & Final Extra! and Smart & Final Business) in the Western United States and its headquarters are located in Commerce, CA, U.S.A.
