STEW LEONARD'S Grocery Stores History
The origin of Stew Leonard’s was a small dairy in Norwalk (Connecticut) called Clover Farms Dairy, founded by Charles Leo Leonard in the early 1920s.
That small dairy shop was very innovative and ahead of its time, because it incorporated a pasteurizing and bottling plant, with maximum freshness. A fleet of trucks carried out the delivery of milk at home.
In 1969, Stew Leonard (Charles’s son) wanted to expand the family business, with a large dairy store in the style of a farmer’s market: the first Stew Leonard’s supermarket.
In the following years, the store grew with new departments of fresh products, such as butcher, fish, cheeses, wines, bakery, … and in 1969 he opened the second grocery store in Danbury, CT.
In 1999 he opened the first store in the state of New York, the Stew Leonard’s in Yonkers. The stores introduce entertainment, with animatronics, costumed characters, … and it’s called “The Disneyland of Dairy Stores” by The New York Times.
Today, Stew Leonard’s Farm Fresh Foods is the largest dairy store in the world, has 7 grocery stores, remains a family-owned business and its headquarters are located in Norwalk, CT, U.S.A.
